Two Day Itinerary for Agra

This two day itinerary is the best way to see the legendary Taj Mahal and other attractions in Agra. Make sure you plan the trip keeping in mind that the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. The itinerary is planned assuming you will be driving in from Delhi (or taking a train) early on Day 1. We suggest you plan your next move on Day 3.

On Day 1, leave Delhi early to arrive in Agra by mid-morning. Visit the Agra Fort, followed by Itamud ud Daulah. In the late afternoon visit the Taj Mahal to view in the evening sun.

Start Day 2 with an early morning second visit to the Taj Mahal for a sunrise viewing. Linger a while before heading out to see Fatehpur Sikri, the abandoned Mughal city a short drive outside of Agra. In evening visit Sikandra, the tomb of emperor Akbar.

Day 1

Depart from Delhi early this morning. You can hire a taxi to take you down the Yamuna Expressway (3 hrs), or take a train. The best option is the Shatabdi Express which leaves New Delhi at 6 am and arrives 8 am. Both the Yamuna Expressway as well as the Agra Cantt railway station are close to your first attraction.

Agra Fort

Visit the imposing Agra Fort (a.k.a. Red Fort) (CaptivaTour Audio Guide available), the seat of the Mughal Empire during the reigns of 3 of the great Mughals – Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan.

Move on to the nearby Itamad-ud-Daula, the tomb of Mirza Ghias Beg – a senior noble in the Mughal court, father to Empress Nur Jehan, and grandfather to Arjumand Bano, the wife of Shah Jahan for whom the Taj Mahal was built.

Taj Mahal

After a lunch break and rest (you did have a very early morning!), visit the Taj Mahal late in the afternoon. That way you will beat the afternoon heat and crowds, but have enough time to look around before settling down to gaze at the Taj in the evening glow.

Spend the rest of the evening reliving the experience, if possible at a rooftop restaurant with a good view of the Taj

Day 2

Taj Mahal
It is well worth the second early morning in a row to visit the Taj Mahal just as it opens around sunrise. The morning sun catches the Taj just so, and having seen the monument the previous evening, you can spend a leisurely hour just gazing at its beauty and composing that perfect photo.

Fatehpur Sikri

Drive to Fatehpur Sikri (CaptivaTour Guide Available) and visit the amazing 16th century palace complex with its various buildings, the purpose of many of which is not clearly understood (except by guides, who make stuff up!) Do not miss the Jama Mosque with the shrine of Salim Chishti and the gargantuan Buland Darwaza gate.

Return to Agra in the afternoon, and spend some time shopping for art and artefacts. Visit the tomb of Akbar at Sikandra. In the evening you can make a visit to Mehtab Bagh for one final view of the Taj Mahal, this time from across the river.
