One Day Itinerary for Agra

While Taj Mahal is the main reason you will want to visit Agra, there are several excellent sites that you should also visit if you can, including two UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. It is difficult to complete all these places in one day, but perhaps can just about be done. The itinerary assumes you arrived in Delhi the previous evening and have the whole day at your disposal.

A two day itinerary is a lot better if you want to explore Agra’s brilliant monuments properly. The alternative is to pick one of Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort to visit in addition to the Taj.

Both Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri are not much fun to visit in the afternoon, when the sun bakes the stone floors. In the Taj and in the Jama Masjid section of Fatehpur Sikri, you will need to be barefoot – not much fun in the sun

Day 1

Taj MahalStart early morning with a early visit to the Taj Mahal (CaptivaTour Audio Guide available), the 400 year old mausoleum of an emperor’s love variously described as “Poetry in Marble” and “a Teardrop on the Cheek of Time”. The monument is best viewed early in the morning when the sun rays are low and the crowds sparse.

Agra Fort

After breakfast, visit Agra Fort (CaptivaTour Audio Guide available), a grand Mughal fort with impressive defensive fortifications and a vast array of palaces and buildings inside. Home to 3 ‘great’ Mughals, the Agra fort shows the architectural imprint of all three, as well as the evolution of Mughal architectural style.

Take a leisurely lunch and spend some time shopping for knick-knacks while the sun it at its hottest.

Fatehpur Sikri

Drive to Fatehpur Sikri (CaptivaTour Audio Guide available), the new capital city and palace complex built by Emperor Akbar but abandoned in less than 2 decades. Fatehpur Sikri has one of the best preserved collections of Mughal palaces and buildings and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
